Chapter thirteen.

[Warrior]

"One of you?" Cedric asked, looking at me with a frown.
"Oh, you must be wondering what Layla is,"
Damien said, turning to look at me.
Cedric bobbed his head in a swift motion.
"Show him," Damien urged.
I closed my eyes momentarily,
allowing my thoughts to circle around my formation and bearing in mind to remain clothed.
I crossed my hands across my chest,
just in case it did not work.
I could hear Cedric inhaling sharply.
I opened my eyes, and as expected,
my lower body was of a horse.
I exhaled in relief once I had managed to accomplish the task of remaining clothed.

"Why.." he began, his voice shaking.
"Didn't you tell me any of this?" he continued, still gawking at my unhumanly form.
"Well.. Because.." I started to fumble for the correct words.
"You should know that we aren't ordinary people,"
Damien said, his eyes focusing on Cedric.
He looked at Damien with a raised brow.
"And that we should not reveal our identity in the human world,"
Damien continued, hoping that Cedric would understand.
"What about me?" Cedric asked, looking at his own body.
"I'm completely human," he concluded.
"That may change. You can't possibly wander into Garlian without being one of us."
Damien stressed on the word 'us'.

Cedric just stared at the both of us,
obviously confused about what we were talking about.
Damien then suggested we should walk home and discuss everything there instead.
Cedric agreed, while I practiced using my new legs.

"Oh," Diana gasped, when the three of us returned.
"Who is this?" She asked, running her eyes from Cedric's head to toes.
"Layla's friend," Damien muttered under his breath.
Diana clicked her tongue.
She could obviously sense the jealousy in her brother,
even without her powers.
"Well, make yourself at home," she said, smiling warmly at Cedric.
He nodded and looked at Damien and I for further instructions.
"Sit down," Damien said, gesturing to the satin sofa in the living room.
Cedric sat down awkwardly, beside Damien.
Damien, however, calmly explained everything he needed to know.
From where we are right now,
how he probably got here,
the Garnies that were after me,
the warriors, council and the rules.
In return, Cedric tried to explain how he managed to enter the world of Garlian.

He was with Hannah, and she was so shy that she only ordered a Milkshake.
Her whole face was flushed but she tried to talk mostly about Cedric.
After awhile, however, she accidentally mentioned about her feelings towards him,
got so embarrassed that she fled the restaurant in a hurry.
Cedric, on the other hand, felt an urge to find me.
So he followed a strange feeling he had in his heart and walked into an alleyway.
He then flung his arms out in front of him,
and he saw a translucent screen and walked into it.

He felt weird, walking into it.
He thought that he had lost his goddamn mind when he walked on the damp green grass.
But as he walked further,
he could fell the pull of his heart tighten,
and he trudged foward eagerly.
And that was when he found us,
sitting in the special hollow.

"Interesting," Diana commented.
Cedric jumped; he hadn't noticed that Diana had seated herself beside him.
"You said that there was an urge?"
Damien asked, frowning.
"Yes, it felt like I had a second instinct,"
Cedric answered honestly.
"Then you must be.." Diana said slowly, aware that Damien was listening.
"What?" Cedric asked impatiently.
"One of the centaur's personal warrior,"
She whispered.
I feel Damien's whole body tensing up.
I snuggled closer to him, hoping that he wouldn't blow his top.

"Are you sure?" Damien asked, trying to get a hold on his feelings.
"Yes, I'm afraid so," Diana said truthfully.
The silence was filled with Damien's sigh.
"In that case," Damien said, turning over to Cedric.
Cedric stiffened, wondering if Damien was going to kill him.
"Please take care of Layla," he said, patting Cedric on the shoulders.
"Ah," was all Cedric could say, for he did not know whether to be relieved or worried.

Chapter twelve.

[Confrontation.]

Damien looked at me with a confused yet concerned look.
"What is it?" he asked.
"I have this friend," I started, thinking of what I should and should not reveal.
"Go on," he urged, as we started walking into a more deserted road.
I started explaining everything the Cedric had told me,
about the Garnies chasing me in his dreams,
about the fear I experienced when I thought of the scenario,
and the confusion as to why Cedric had dreamt about such things.

He seemed to ponder about it for a moment,
with his hands poised in the air,
ready to open a portal.
"Like I have said before, they do have the ability to appear in your dreams,"
he mumured, taking me by the hand and leading me into the portal.
"But the thing that puzzles me is that the Garnies chose to show it to him.."
he stated, trailing off.
I nodded my head, trying my very best to make sense of everything.
I chewed on my lower lip thoughtfully,
and allowed him to bring me to the most magical place I like,
Alaynia falls.

He sat down at our favourite spot, a spot near the edge of the lake,
yet sheltered by a large ancient tree, with a little hollow of a cave-like structure.
"Layla.." He said, looking up into my eyes.
My head shot up, eager to hear his conclusion.
"I think your friend has some special kind of relationship with you."
He spoke, his eyebrows knitting together.
From the tone of his voice, I could tell that he did not like that thought very much.
"We have been close friends, actually," I mumured,
deciding to tell him the truth.
"What-" he began, but was interrupted by the sound of footsteps.

Damien got defensive almost immediately.
He got up and stood before me protectively, ready to phase if necessary.
I crouched low behind him, my heart pounding furiously.
That was when I saw him.
Emerald green eyes and long blonde hair,
it was Cedric himself.
He had noticed my presence,
along with Damien's.
His confused look changed to a furious look within seconds.
Cedric stormed up towards Damien,
hand outstretched, ready to push him out of the way.
Damien, on the other hand, transformed into the snow-white fox that
I had seen the first time I met him.
He bared his fangs and his fur bristled.
Cedric seemed to stop for a moment, unsure of what to do.
It seemed like Cedric figured that if he did not attempt to harm any of us,
nothing bad would happen to him.
He raised his hands in surrender, his eyes looking to the sides.
"I won't harm her," he stated.
Damien looked up to me and I nodded stiffly.
He then phased back, eying Cedric cautiously.

Cedric broke the ice first.
"Who are you?" he asked coldly.
"I am Layla's.." Damien trailed off,
having difficulty picking out the correct word.
"what you guys may call a boyfriend.."
he finished lamely.
I noticed Cedric's jaw clench, and then the tensing of Damien's muscles.
"What about you?" Damien questioned.
"Well, so am I," he challenged back.

I stared in shock.
"No you're not," I stated.
Damien turned to me, his face portraying disbelief yet the pain in his eyes were evident.
"We're not, he's just saying that. We've been close friends but
that doesn't mean that we're actually together."
I couldn't help but to sound bitchy,
but the fact that Cedric could have said such a thing made my blood boil.
Still, I could not ignore the stinging pain in my chest when I saw the hurt in his eyes.
"Look, Cedric, I don't mean to be mean but come on,"
I said, knowing that I would regret it if I ever lost this friendship.
"But you know that I love you,"
he stated stubbornly.
"I do, but I have never felt that way, Cedric.."
I tried to reduce the harshness in my tone.

"I thought that we might have had a chance to.. Y'know, get together.."
he mumbled, mostly to himself.
This was where Damien interjected.
"I'm sorry, but Layla and I have been fated, actually.
it is only in due time that you would find your true love,"
he stated in a matter-of-fact way.
"I guess," he said,
turning his back against us and tripping on the roots of the ancient tree.
"Ouch," he muttered, trying to get up.
"By the way," Damien said, focusing on Cedric.
"Yeah?" Cedric asked, rubbing his sore buttocks.
"How did you get in here in the first place?"
I looked at Cedric, eager to know too.
"That.. Is rather confusing to me, I'm trying to figure it out too,"
Cedric admitted simply.

"Could it be.. That you are actually one of us?"
Damien concluded, his eyes widening as he scrutinized Cedric.

Chapter eleven.

[Jealousy.]

"Layla, Layla? Layla, wake up!"
My eyes fluttered open and I stared straight into Cedric's face.
"Gah! Gave me a heart attack!"
I screamed, scrambling to my feet.
"You scared me more,"
He mumbled.
"Oh, about that, sorry."
I said, scratching my head.
"I forgot to tell you.."
"Huh?"
I asked.
"Actually I think in my dream.. It was you running away, not me."
"What?"
"I was being you,"
he explained.
I froze.
If I was him in his dreams..
Why were those Garnies..
Showing him this?
That means he's not a centaur, is he?
So many questions..
My cell rang.
"Hang on a minute,"
I said, reaching for my phone.

"LAYLAAAAAAAA!"
Hannah screamed through the line.
I squeezed my eyes shut as I held my phone away from me.
"WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO YOUUUU?!"
"What time were we supposed to meet again?"
I asked sheepishly.
"12.30!"
Eh.
I glanced at the clock that hung on Cedric's wall.
1.20pm.
"EHHHHHHHHHHHHH?!!!!! IT'S 1-"
I started, but she screamed back.
"YESSSS. You were supposed to meet me here an hour ago!"
Geez.
Nowonder she was so worked up.

I looked over to Cedric,
who gave a 'sorry' look.
"Okay, I'm really sorry, I'd rush over right now,"
"You'd betterrrrr!"
She warned.
I sighed and hung up.
"Well, I better get going,"
I told Cedric.
I took my groceries from his fridge,
and handbag and cell.
"Bye," Cedric called, waving from his door.
I smiled as I hurried down the pavement.

"Lay-la,"
Hannah said, tapping her foot.
"Sorry,"
I mumbled as I quickly unlocked my front door and walked in.
"You should've called if you were gonna be late,"
She snapped.
"I uh, bumped into Cedric and went to his house and fainted,"
I explained as I stuffed the groceries into the fridge.
"You whaaaaaat?!"
She went wide-eyed at me.
And then realization hit me.
"S'cuse me for a bit,"
I said, running into my room and slamming the door shut behind me.
Nana looked confused, but I ignored her.
I plunged my hand into my pocket only to realize it was empty.
Danggit, Layla, you have to tell Damien now!
Where could you have put it?
I patted my pockets,
but they were all empty.

I rummaged my bag and still couldn't find it.
"Layla?"
Hannah called, pounding on my door.
"Just a minute!"
I called back.
I thought hard.
No, I didn't throw it anywhere.
I remembered before I left my house it was in my pocket.
My pocket!
It probably dropped out when I fainted!
I reached for my cell when it rang.
"Layla, I uh, found something on my floor,"
Cedric said.
"Who's Damien?"
He asked.
Oh no.
"There was this message thinngy,"
He started.
"What did it say?!"
"Layla, are you alright? I sensed something wrong. .... Damien."
I gasped.
"Who's Damien?"
he probed.
"He likes you, doesn't he?"
he accused.
"It's a long story and-"
I said, but cut off my sentence.
"Cedric, are you jealous?"
I asked.
"N-n-no, whoever said that I was jealous?"
"I'm not jealous,"
"No I'm not."
"I'm telling you, I'm not jeal-"
He blabbered, but I cut him off.
"Why are you being so defensive..?"
"Fine, I admit it! I .."
he began.
"Who's Damien?"
he questioned again.
"Don't change the subject."
"I.. I.. I like you. Ever since we became friends,"
he said.
.
.
.

"Laylaaaaaa!"
Hannah's voice cut me off my internal blabber.
"Um Cedric, could you meet me at macdonald's with that thing now?"
I asked.
"O-okay.."
I hung up.
I flung open the door and grabbed Hannah's arm and dashed out of the house.
"What the?"
She began.
"Not now,"
I told her.

As we got nearer, I slowed down.
Man, my stamina has improved!
I looked at Hannah,
who looked like she had just ran a marathon.
Well, I guess she just did.
She was panting and looked so tired.
Well, on the other hand, I felt energetic.
And that I felt that I could run more.
Maybe it had something to do with being a centaur.
"Layla, don't tell me you took drugsssss,"
Hannah told me in between pants.
I smiled and shook my head.
"I wouldn't do such a stupid thing,"
"Layla!"
Cedric called.
I turned over to see him on a bicycle.
"Here,"
he said, pushing the gadget into my palms.
"Thanks,"
"No problem."

"Uhhh.. Will someone explain what is going on?"
Hannah began.
"I'll explain soon, right now I need to go home,"
I said.
"But we just got here!"
She exclaimed.
"And I hadn't eaten lunch yet,"
she complained.
"Well, how about this. Since Cedric is free, he can accompany you,"
I said, looking from Hannah to Cedric.
Her eyes lit up at once.
I smirked.
I knew Hannah had liked Cedric after all.

Once I was out of sight,
I fished out the gadget.
5 new messages.
Wow.
I read each of them guiltily.

-Layla, are you alright? I sensed something wrong.
Damien.
-Layla? Are you alright?
Damien.
-Layla, we're all worried, please answer!
Dianna.
-Damien is very stressed right now, he told us he will come to you personally if something really happens.
Dianna.
-Hang on Layla, I'm coming,
Damien.

I felt my heard throb in pain.
I didn't want to cause them burden, nor worry..
"Layla!"
I heard the pattering of footsteps.
I turned around to face Damien.
His eyebrows were pulled down,
and his eyes were filled with worry.
I felt my eyes tear.
"Damien!"
I exclaimed.
He ran towards me and hugged me tightly,
afraid to lose me.
"I'm okay, actually,"
I assured him.
"Are you sure? But I sensed that you were scared.."
he trailed off.
"I couldn't imagine what would have caused you so much fear.."
I patted his back.
"Well, I needed to talk to you about that.."
I began.

Chapter ten.

[Panic.]

"Honey, can you help me buy some groceries?"
My mother asked as I stepped into the living room.
"Sure, mum. I'd get changed,"
I said as I headed back to my room.
"Here's the list, and here's the money."
She said, following me.
"Leave it on my table,"
I said without glancing back.

I opened the door and started onto the wet pavement.
Huh, guess it had rained last night.
I shoved my hands into the pockets of my jacket as I hurried down the street.
Kindda chilly..
Well, I guess it would be, since winter's coming soon.
I stepped into the warm, small minimart.

I walked in between the aisles and out,
looking into the familiar shelves for the groceries.
I paid for them at the counter and walked out.
My handbag vibrated.
I stopped and peered into it.
My cell.

'Hey Layla, are you free today?
Hannah.'

'Yeah,' I texted back.
'Wanna have lunch together?'
She asked.
'What time and where? I'm craving for-'
I texted, so consumed in my own world that I didn't realise where I was heading.
I bumped into someone,
and he cried out.
'Ow! Hey-'
He stopped as he looked at me.
I looked up,
and saw the familiar face.

"Cedric? What are you doing here?"
.
.
.
.

"Yeah, see, I thought I needed to talk to you,"
He said, glancing around.
"Can we sit down somewhere?"
He asked, glancing around.
"Sure, how does macdonalds sound?"
I replied, gesturing to the nearby fast food outlet.
He nodded his head, and we walked silently.
We ordered a drink each and sat down outside the restaurant.
"Actually, I've been having some weird dreams,"
he told me.
"Like, what kind of dreams?"
I asked.
"I'm not really sure what's going on. All that I know is that something is coming for me,"
My heart skipped a beat.
"What?"
I asked in disbelief.
"No matter how much I run, they'd still chase me,"
he said.
I choked.
Hunted?
It cannot be..
Was Cedric a Centaur, too?
And that Garnies were hunting him?
'They have the ability to appear in your dreams,'
Damien had once said.
"Um, I need to show you something, too."
"What is it?"
I asked, sipping my green tea.
"You see, it's uh, at home."
"Oh."
"Could we go-"
he said, but I cut him off.
"Yeah, let's go now."
He smiled nervously as we stood up.

"Here," he said, handing me a piece of paper.
My heartbeat increased.
Long, unkempt hair.
Razor sharp fangs and fingernails.
Long, fork-like tongue and glistening red eyes.
Snake-like body..
"No,"
I gasped,
stumbling backwards.
"Layla?"
He asked.
I hit the edge of something and crumpled to the floor.
Garnies.
I must tell Damien..

Chapter nine.

[Home.]

I awoke to the smell of somone's cooking.
I flipped over on the bed, and my fingers pressed against something papery.
I turned my head around,
and saw a neatly folded piece of paper.

I smiled to myself as I sat on the bed,
and then realised something.
At one corner of my room was a new door.
A canopy of leaves covered it slightly.
Curious, I shuffled forward.
I swung the door open and..
wow.
It was a bathroom.
Let me rephrase,
a really high-class bathroom.
A glass bathtub..
But the frame was hollow,
how queer.

In between the glass panes were water and fishes.
Awesome!
And there was also a shower area.
It was glass-walled,
and shower points were everywhere.
The top, the sides.
And at the bottom it was also glass,
again with the fishes and stuff.
This is so cool!
I got myself a nice hot shower,
and grabbed a towel from the hook.
Then, I peered into a closet that faced the shower area.
This place just gets better and better..

I decided on a beige velvet turtle-neck,
with a pleated checkered skirt.
Satisfied, I walked out of the bathroom to my room.
And walked back in.
I glanced into the unique translucent mirror.
"My hair.." I mumbled,
walking to my dressing table.
Odd..
I thought.
Although I have never ever been here before,
it seemed like I'm very familiar in my room.
Not my room from Australia,
but my room here in Garlian.
I brushed my hair slowly,
deep in thought.

I propped myself and looked into the mirror.
Today is the day I'd return to Earth.
I reached my hand to my doorknob,
exhaled a sigh and turned it.
Diana greeted me first.
She was walking back and forth,
exchanging plates to and fro from the dining area to the cute little kitchen.
"Smells good," I commented as she passed by.
She supressed a grin.
I spotted Damien seated in the dining area.
He smiled and gestured me over.
"You smell like strawberries,"
He commented once I sat beside him.

"You don't like strawberries?"
I asked,
but he laughed.
"I do, I do, we all do,"
And then he added,
"If you wanna get home you better be quick,"
"Here," Diana said,
pushing me a plate of ham and cheese omelettes and some toast.

Soon, we were standing in front of a portal.
This portal was a permanent one in Garlian,
and only the inhabitants of Garlian could use it.
I hitched a ride from Damien, heehee.
"Well then sister, see you around,"
Diana said, hugging me.
I hugged her back.
"I'll miss you,"
I told her.
She nodded.
"I'd be with her for a bit,"
her brother told her.
"Sure, sure.." she replied,
smiling cheekily.

And then with Damien behind me,
I stepped into the portal.
It blurred and wobbled in sight.
I looked curiously around, this portal was a unique one;
not the temporary ones I had experienced.
Damien entered, and the portal settled down.
We were now standing in a narrow passageway,
with two portals facing end-to-end.
I'd be back to Earth within a few steps.
"Don't go out yet,"
He said, holding onto my arm.
He turned me around to face him.
"Keep this with you,"
he said as he pressed something small into my palm.
"What is it for?"
I asked.
"Use it to communicate with us,"
"Oh and uh.."
I looked at him questionally.
"Come back whenever you want,"

"That wasn't what you wanted to say," I told him.
Somehow I knew he had something else to say.
"O-o-of course,"
He stammered.
He took a deep breath to calm himself.
And without warning,
he pulled me to him,
and hugged me.
"I'll miss you,"
he whispered in my ear.
The tingly sensation started,
and my cheeks flushed.
When he was done, he pushed me gently into the portal.

My clothes melted,
and another fabric wrapped itself around me.
I landed on my feet as the cloth swung around me.
My cocktail dress.
That was when the gadget vibrated.
I lifted it up and saw a message.
Technology these days.
This was another version of a handphone, I guess.

Amazinggggg.
I walked back to the pool,
and Cedric stared.
"That was fast," He noted.
I smiled as I sat down.
I'd left my handbag here, too.
I looked at the phone-look-alike again.
It had Garlian's timezone on it.
And it had a translucent keypad.
I sipped on my wine,
savouring its unique taste.
That was when Sarah's voice rang through my head.
"Layla! Laylaaaaaaaaaaaa! Layyyyyylaaaaa!"
She shrieked,
runnning past a sea of people.
When I turned around,
I widened my eyes and turned back to run,
but she slammed onto me before I could do anything.

"Falling, Falliiiing!!!!"
I screamed, stumbling backwards due to the impact.
"Uh-oh."
She said before I crashed onto the floor,
with Sarah falling on top of me.
"Ow..."
I moaned.
"Ow ow ow ow owwww.."
"Get off me already!"
I complained,
trying to push her off me.
She got to her feet and helped me up.
"Now what was THAT for?"
I said numbly.
"I liked your present."
She said sheepishly.

"Oh god,"
I said,
feigning sarcasm.
I yawned.
"I think I'm gonna go home now,"
I told her in between yawns.
"So soon?"
"Yeah, it's been a long day."
I took my handbag and excused myself.

I thanked Sarah's cousin, Andy,
who'd offered to drive me home.
I closed the door and walked up the little pavillon into my front lawn.
Home sweet home.
I unlocked my door and closed it behind.
"Amber!"
I couldn't sound happier.
"Oh Amber,"
I sighed,
scooping her up and carried her all the way to my bedroom.
Having closed the door behind me,
I looked longingly into my bed.

How much I've missed my room,
I thought.
I climbed onto my bed,
and placed my handbag and the Garlian cell on my bedside table.
Amber jumped up on the bed and made herself comfortable.
And very soon,
we both drifted to sleep.

Chapter eight.

[Council.]

Damien stood protectively behind me,
keeping his hold on my hand.
I watched as Damien and Diana explained the situation to Lord Garlian.
The rest of the council discussed among themselves.
"We'll have to strengthen our defences,"
Lord garlian announced.
"Yes we must," The council said.
One slim, brunnette lady spoke in a clear voice.
"To serve and protect Garlian's inhabitants!"
She cried.
"To serve and protect Garlian's inhabitants!"
The others echoed.
"Meeting adjournaled."
Lord Garlian declared.
I watched as the eldered white Lord Garlian hobble into the hallway,
with guardians flanking his sides.

"You can uhh, let go now?"
I asked when we reached my room.
"But-" he started.
Then I realised..
I didn't want him to let go.
I was scared.
Besides, I enjoyed his touch on my hand.
"Don't," I heard his sister hiss.
I felt warm and bubbly inside.
"Yessss!" I heard her exclaim.
"Huh?" was the only reply I could think of.
"What?" Damien asked.
"Look at your arm," she snickered.
"Both of you."
I followed her gaze and looked over at my right arm.
Nothing.
I turned to look at my other arm.
And gasped.
On my upper arm,
a tatooed heart the size of a grape was glowing faintly on its own.
It was mesmerising to watch.
I traced it with the tip of my index finger, making my insides feeling warm and tingly.

I lifted my head slowly,
just in time to see Damien do the same.
We both gasped when we realized both of us had it.
And then I noticed something else.
A minature figure of a centaur and a fox was inside the middle of the heart.
We turned to Diana,
who was still gazing at us in adoration.
"What-" I said,
and Damien continued.
"Is the meaning of this?"
He demanded.
She slapped her forehead comically.
"Let me show you.."
She said.
Slowly, she waved her hands about,
and a misty shape took form within her palms.
We watched slowly as two figures formed.
And then our eyes widened.

A shape of a centaur and a fox formed.
Their hearts flew out of their bodies and joined as one.
And it multiplied by two, and floated back to the figures.
When no one spoke,
Diana said "You two are really slow.."
She let her hands drop by her sides,
and the figures, mist and all, dissapeared.
I waited for an explanation.
"Your hands," She asked.
We placed our hands in hers.
She took them and placed my hand in his.
Warmness flushed in,
and my whole body tingled.
I turned to see the heart and gasped.
It was glowing in pink,
glowing brighter and brighter.
And it looked as if it was beating;
it moved on its own and contracted and so on.

"You two are fated lovers,"
She told us.
Well, that's a start,
I thought.
But my cheeks flushed.
"Couldn't you guys feel it?"
She asked.
We nodded sheepishly.
Truth was,
I didn't know why I was feeling like that.
Well, now that I know..
I felt a little embarrassed.
"Well, it's time you should get some sleep,"
She said, facing me.

I nodded, still embarrassed.
She took a step towards her brother,
but he shook his head.
"I'll keep an eye for Garnies,"
He said.
"I'd sleep there,"
He said, pointing to the sattin couch at the end of the room.
She nodded and left.
"It's okay, go to sleep. Everything will be alright."
He told me before heading to the couch.
And I flung myself across the bed,
and closed my eyes.
So many things had happened.
So many things have changed.
One thing I was sure of..
I wouldn't lead a normal life that I used to anymore.
But that wasn't going to stop me from having fun.
And with that,
I drifted into a peaceful sleep.

Chapter seven.

[Fear]

A thick mist hung in the cool, damp air.
The pale moonlight casted an eerie blanket all over.
And then I heard them.
"Layla..." They chroused.
I reconized that voice immediately.
A chill ran down my spine as I froze in place.
Garnies.
Many of them.
And they were all coming for me.
I heard the rustling of leaves again,
and shadows loomed in the bushes.
My breathing rate increased.
My heart was beating so furiously,
I swear I could hear it myself.

My ribs ached in protest of my crazy heart.
My mind was screaming at me to run,
but I couldn't feel my body at all.
Tears streamed down on each sides of my cheeks.
Please, I don't want to die..
I thought bitterly.
It was not long after they emerged from the bushes.
I cried in horror.
There were 10 of them.
How am I ever gonna escape?
I watched in fear as they surrounded me,
trapping me in the middle.
"No..." I whispered.
The Garnies smiled wryly.
"And now.." The biggest of them all,
which I guess was their leader,
spoke.

My eyes darted from one Garnie to another,
and I felt more and more helpless.
I knew that I could not possibly stand a chance against them.
They slithered foward, tightening the circle.
Once they were close enough, they leaned backwards, ready to launch at me.
"Now!" Their leader cried shrilly.
I widened my eyes in horror,
watching them close down on me.

And that was when I woke up screaming.
"Layla, it's okay, you're safe, you're safe,"
Damien soothed.
It was a dream?
A nightmare.
My face was damp with tears.
I drew in small, abrupt pants.
My heart was still racing from the shock.
"Calm down, Layla."
He said softly.
I looked at him with fear written all across my face.
My breathing eventually slowed down to its normal rate.
"That's right.." He praised.

I looked into his deep, warm eyes,
and my heart skipped a beat.
I could feel myself melting.
"Damien.."
I started, tears brimming again.
That was it;
he pulled me into his arms.
At first, I was too scared to realise what's going on.
I only knew I was scared-to-death and Damien was with me.
And then..
I opened my eyes again,
and came to my senses.

Damien.
Was.
Hugging.
Me.

The thought made me flush.
I pulled out abruptly,
face as red as a tomato.
"I...I..I..I..I.."
we began at the same time.
I looked away,
unable to look into his eyes.
"I..I..I.." I stammered.
I looked up shyly at him,
just to see him turn the other way,
also blushing.

I was suddenly self-concious.
I bet my hair was in a mess,
and my face looked terrible,
with puffy eyes and such.
I started running my fingers through my hair hastily,
in an attempt to smoothen out the knots.
Slowly, I let my eyes wander around.
I was sitting on a sattin bed.
How odd.
Although the room was rather small,
it was warm and cozy.
A ceiling light dangled above had twisted garlands of plants.
The walls were concave and was warm brown.
A canopy hung from above above the bed I was sitting on.
A full-body-length mirror stood nearby.
There was a dressing table, too.
It looked kind of ancient,
which made it more grand-looking.
I opened my mouth to speak,
but my throat felt parched.
What if my breath stank?
I closed it shut.
"Are you okay now?"
His voice broke the silence.
I noticed his cheeks were still pink.
"Y-y-yes."
I managed to stutter.
"Thank you. "
I whispered.
He nodded and stood up.

Where was he going?
He can't leave me..
I didn't want to be alone.
"Damien?" I asked.
"Yeah?" He asked,
but didn't turn around.
"I'm scared.."
I admited.
He turned around,
eyes big and sad.
"I know it's terrifying,"
He began.
He was standing in front of me now.
"I so happened to pass by, and I heard you screaming and crying in your sleep, "
He told me.
"I was outside your door when I heard you, I thought you were in danger,"
He explained.
"I dreamt of them.."
I stated.

His face froze.
"You dreamt of who?"
He asked, his tone serious.
"Those Garnies."
I replied.
"How many of them?"
He questioned.
"About 10.."

His mouth dropped open.
And then he swept me off my feet,
and dashed out of the comfy room.
Everything was a blur, then.
But judging from the bright light,
I could tell we were outside of the room I was in.
He set me down gently,
and called out Diana's name.
Within a few seconds she was right beside him.
He explained the details to her,
and her expression changed,
 from plain curiosity,
to shock, to confusion
and finally her eyes hardened.
"They're coming.." she spoke.
"They're coming.." he repeated.
"For her." she gasped.

That was when something caught my eye.
I turned and saw a Garnie.
I froze in my place.
Damien and Diana was beside me instantly.
"What?" They asked.
"That," I answered, pointing.
"I don't see it," she stated.
"Neither do I," Damien said.
"Must be those illusions again."
Damien said.
"They have a special power to do that, don't worry. They're not here."
He explained.
I took one step towards him,
reaching my hands out to him.
He reached out and hugged me...
And then swept me off my feet again.
I wasn't expecting the carrying part but still..

"We must tell the council about this.."
Diana said, trailing off.
"We must," he confirmed.
And they took off.
